Why can't I get my engine to fire up?
If your engine isn't firing up as quickly as it normally does, then you'll want to get to the shop ASAP so the underlying issue can be identified and addressed. By ignoring the issue, you risk the problem worsening to the point that your car won't start at all. At Austin Auto Repair, our local mechanics are experts at diagnosing and fixing problems that prevent engines from starting.
Common Causes of No-Start
A problem with the starter is one common reason that engines don't fire up. One symptom of starter failure is that you turn the key to start the engine but then only get a clicking sound. A faulty starter may also cause a grinding sound.
Another common reason for no-start is that there's an issue with fuel supply. A faulty fuel pump can prevent gas from properly moving from the tank to the engine. Warning signs of fuel pump failure include: sputtering, decreasing gas mileage, and a whining sound coming from the gas tank. A clogged fuel filter can also cause problems with getting your engine to fire up. It's important to replace your fuel filter about every 25,000 miles so that the proper amount of fuel can easily reach your engine. Your engine might also struggle to start due to gunked-up fuel injectors. Pouring a fuel additive into your tank can be helpful with eliminating pollutants from injectors.
Issues with the battery/charging system are also common reasons for no-start. Batteries often die because of things like loose/corroded connections, parasitic draws, old age, and—of course—forgetting to turn off headlights. A bad alternator can also lead to a dead battery. Symptoms of alternator failure include: problems with electrical accessories such as power windows and the radio; headlights acting erratically; and a warning light that comes on in the shape of a little battery or reads ALT or GEN.
