What are easy ways to improve fuel-efficiency?

Gas prices are expected to keep on rising this year. To ease your wallet's pain at the pump, there are certain measures worth taking that will help your car optimize fuel-efficiency. Some of these tasks are easy to do yourself, while others can be taken care of at the shop in little time. At Austin Auto Repair, our local mechanics can conduct maintenance tasks that will help your vehicle get the best gas mileage possible.

Simple Tips for Improving Gas Mileage

As you drive to work and back each day, there are some easy ways you can boost MPGs. It's very important that you're driving with proper tire pressure, which typically needs to be at a point between 30 and 35 psi, and it's worth checking your tires to see their exact specification. When driving with underinflated tires, gas mileage can drop because the engine needs to expend more power to get the soft rubber to roll forward. You'll also want to maintain proper tire pressure so that you don't increase the risk of a blowout. Another easy way to prevent fuel from going to waste is to ensure that your gas cap is tightly secured. When a gas cap is loose or missing, fuel may evaporate before your engine gets the opportunity to run on it.

When you visit us at the shop, we can quickly complete routine maintenance tasks that benefit fuel-efficiency. Air filters should be changed out every 12,000 to 15,000 miles. It's important that the combustion chamber receives the right amount of air so that your engine doesn't burn additional fuel to compensate for a lack of air. And to help ensure that contaminants don't cause a reduction in performance and fuel-efficiency, fuel filters should be replaced every 20,000 to 30,000 miles. Other types of maintenance we can do that will help optimize gas mileage are spark plug replacement and oil changes.
