Do I need to Replace the Alternator?
The alternator has a very important job, it powers most of the electrical components of your vehicle during operation. It also creates additional electricity that is stored in the battery and is used to start your vehicle. If the alternator were to fail the battery would quickly die and you would not be able to start the motor. Before it gets to that point you will likely encounter one or more of the following problems. It is very important to have your alternator replaced as soon as it becomes apparent that it needs to be, so that you don't end up with a vehicle that will not start!
Dim or flickering headlights
The alternator is what provides power to the headlights during operation. If the alternator is failing it won't be able completely illuminate the lights because it can't produce enough electricity to do so. You may also notice that the headlights will flicker on and off if the alternator is beginning to fail.
Rattling noise
While that sounds like a rather vague symptoms, a rattling noise that occurs under the hood may indicate loose mounting bolts. This will cause the alternator to vibrate which can eventually lead to it damaging itself.
Trouble with electrical accessories
Since the alternator is what provides electrical power to many accessories of the vehicle, such as power seats and windows, the radio and others, you may experience trouble with these things should the alternator be on its way out.
Constantly dying battery
If your battery dies you may be able to jump start it. If it does continuously it may need to be replaced. If the battery is rather new and it continues to die it is likely at the fault of the alternator. The alternator is what creates electricity that is stored in the battery to be used to help start the vehicle. If the alternator fails it will no longer produce electricity and the power stored in the battery will be quickly used up.
Car won't start
While there are many things that can cause a vehicle to not start the alternator is one of them. This is because of the aforementioned issue of not charging the battery if it has failed.
