Must-Know Signs of Suspension Trouble

For your car to handle smoothly and safely, its suspension needs to be working properly. When you first notice a symptom of suspension trouble, it'll be best to get to the shop so the mechanic can take a look. At Austin Auto Repair, our local mechanics are experts at diagnosing and fixing suspension problems. Come and see us if you encounter any of the following signs of a bad suspension.

Symptoms of Suspension Failure

One of the better-known signs of suspension trouble is that the vehicle begins bouncing heavily whenever it hits any little bump along the way. You may have a damaged spring if you hear clunking sounds when going over rough patches. And if your vehicle sits lower in one corner, then you've got another sign of a bad spring.

In some cases, suspension trouble becomes noticeable while braking. With a faulty suspension, it can feel like your car is nose-diving while you brake. Also, a suspension issue can cause your vehicle to take more time to come to a complete stop after you've initiated the braking process.

You'll want to be mindful of a few other symptoms of suspension failure. With a bad suspension, tire tread may wear down in an uneven manner, which can lead to bald spots forming on tires. Also, if it feels like your car is drifting/swaying when going around corners, then suspension trouble could be brewing. And if you can see oil leaking onto your shocks, then it's probably time for replacement.

Doesn't Pass the Bounce Test

If you have a hunch that your suspension isn't working like it should, then it's worth doing a quick test that can help you get a better sense. To start, make sure your car is parked safely and not prone to rolling. Next, go to the front end, press down strongly on it, rock it two times, and then let go. After that, do the exact same thing on the rear end. After you release, your car shouldn't rock more than three times on its own. But if it does, then it'll be worth having a mechanic take a look at your suspension.
