Spark Plugs

Your internal combustion engined car runs on a mix of gas and oxygen. That mixture is ignited by a tiny spark created by the spark plugs and the resulting force pumps the pistons up and down. If the spark plugs become corroded or are gapped incorrectly they can misfire, resulting in a poor running engine that gets terrible fuel economy.

Air Filter

The air filter removes impurities from the oxygen that is coming into the engine such as dirty and dust. If the air filter becomes clogged with debris it can prevent the proper amount of oxygen from getting into the engine. If this happens the vehicle may burn excessive gasoline to make up for the difference, an issue known as running rich that can greatly decrease fuel economy.

Fuel Filter

To ensure that no contaminants get into the engine via the gasoline your car uses a fuel filter. A dirty fuel filter will block the flow of gasoline which can result in a rough idle, stalling, and decreased fuel economy. This part is very simple to replace on most makes and models and only costs a few dollars.

Oxygen Sensor

The oxygen sensor is located in the exhaust system and measures how much oxygen is in the vehicles emissions to help calculate the proper air/fuel mix. If the oxygen sensor fails due to age, dirt or otherwise it can result in a sharp decrease in fuel economy and increased hazardous emissions. In most cases the check engine light will illuminate if it turns on.
