Important Types of Maintenance for a Healthy Engine

Important Types of Maintenance for a Healthy EngineBy always keeping up with basic maintenance tasks, you'll help to ensure that your engine stays healthy for as long as possible. At Austin Auto Repair, our local mechanics are experts at conducting all types of auto maintenance in the greater Austin, TX area.

Important Engine Maintenance Tasks

To minimize the risk of metal-on-metal contact causing major damage to your engine's moving parts, you should always follow your vehicle's oil change schedule. Your owner's manual will tell you your vehicle's exact needs for oil type and oil change mileage points. Driving with the right amount of unpolluted oil will also help with optimizing engine temperature, engine power, and fuel-efficiency.

Another important task is to replace filters as necessary. Air filters should be replaced at some point between 12,000 and 15,000 miles. If you're driving with a dirty air filter and not enough air is able to reach the combustion chamber, then fuel may burn improperly, causing emissions to worsen. Also, fuel filters should be replaced between 20,000 and 30,000 miles so that pollutants don't harm engine performance and fuel-efficiency.

You'll also want to stay current with cooling system service. Commonly, it's recommended that coolant gets exchanged every 30,000 miles, but it's worth consulting your owner's manual for your vehicle's exact specifications. Overheating can cause major engine problems, such as a cracked block, so it's important that your cooling system is functioning flawlessly.

Timing belt replacement is another important task. Your timing belt ensures that the camshaft moves in sync with the crankshaft. Timing belt replacement generally needs to be done somewhere between 60,000 and 100,000 miles. If you delay timing belt replacement, then you run the risk of the belt breaking and causing severe engine problems.
