Common Signs of a Trouble Under the Hood

Common Signs of a Trouble Under the HoodTroubles that come about under the hood need to be given immediate attention to prevent them from growing worse. Engine issues come in all forms, but most start out very small and will grow worse the longer they are neglected. If you ever encounter any of the following signs of engine trouble be sure to reach out to your local auto repair shop for proper diagnostics. Remember, the longer you wait, the more expensive it will get.

Metal in the Oil

When you have the oil changed be sure the technician performing the service is inspecting the old oil for metal flakes. If any are found it means that excessive friction is occurring between the moving engine parts and repairs are necessary.

Knocking Noise

If your car creates a knocking noise that rises and falls with the speed of the engine RPMs it is important to get to the shop ASAP. This noise is often attributed to failing engine bearings, which the moving parts of the engine rely on to keep spinning. Failed bearings could result in a seized engine.

Excessive Exhaust Smoke

An increase in the amount of exhaust smoke your vehicle is creating is cause for concern. Based on the color of the smoke you can usually get a sense of whatís wrong under the hood. Burning oil will create blue smoke, while too much gasoline being used will create black smoke. If coolant leaks into the combustion chamber excessive white smoke will appear.

Decreased Performance

A general decrease in performance, such as rough idling, stalling, harsh acceleration, jerking or a drop in fuel economy, all indicate itís time for a trip to the shop. Most of these issues require minimal repairs, such as new spark plugs, to get the car back up and running.

Check Engine Light

An obvious sign of engine trouble is if the check engine light comes on. Proper diagnostics need to be done when the light comes on by connecting the vehicle to a computer diagnostic machine. In most cases check engine light issues start small and grow worse with time.
